Load
This project uses “load” as an umbrella term for the demands life places on the body and mind. Exercise, cognitive tasks and environmental changes are measured in different ways; they cannot simply be added into a medical score.

Allostasis
Allostasis describes adjustment to meet environmental demands and maintain stable function. Our Chinese edition uses a reader-friendly term alongside the original English; this is not a claim to standardise Chinese academic terminology.

Recovery
Recovery concerns how function and regulation change over time after a disturbance. Sleep, exercise and psychological research use different definitions and measures of recovery.
Rest describes an activity or arrangement. Whether recovery has occurred requires examining the relevant changes in function.Explore this topic
Allostatic Load
Allostatic load describes the cumulative physiological costs that may accompany repeated or prolonged adaptation. It connects long-term challenges with changes across multiple bodily systems.

Physiological Reserve
Physiological reserve generally refers to capacity a system can call on beyond ordinary demands. Different organs and functions have their own reserves; these should not be treated as one universal “body battery”.
Reserve and resilience are related. Reserve concerns available capacity; resilience also concerns performance after a disturbance.Explore this topic
Resilience
Resilience research examines how individuals or systems resist, recover from or successfully adapt to disturbances. Definitions differ across psychological, cognitive and physiological research.

What does this model show?
The slider changes only the decay parameter in a simplified model, allowing trajectories to be compared. Neither axis has physiological units. These curves are not measured data and do not calculate personal recovery times or health scores.
